Gift packaging specification guide

How to Plan a Custom Gift Tin Around the Product Set

A gift tin should be planned around the items, internal arrangement and opening sequence—not selected from outside dimensions alone. Use the current catalog to shortlist shapes and proportions, then confirm the packout with actual product samples, inner packs or accurate item dimensions before the structure and artwork are approved.

01

Define the gift set and opening sequence first.

List every item that will enter the tin, including retail packs, sachets, jars, accessories, instruction cards and promotional pieces. State which items should be visible first, how they should be removed and whether the tin will be reused after the original products are consumed.

For a multi-item set, send the actual samples or accurate length, width, height and weight of each item. A clear arrangement sketch helps Junmei distinguish the presentation layer from the protection and packing requirements before a tin format is recommended.

02

Size the usable interior from the real packout.

Dimensions shown on product cards are outside dimensions. Curling, lid engagement, wall taper, embossing, seams, an insert and required headspace can all reduce usable internal space. Two tins with similar external dimensions may therefore produce different packouts.

Junmei can compare existing formats against the proposed arrangement, but the final fit should be checked with product samples, inner-pack dimensions or an approved mock-up. Do not approve a gift tin from item count or outside size alone.

03

Match the shape and closure to presentation and distribution.

Round tins create a continuous visual surface and work well for central or nested arrangements. Square and rectangular tins provide defined panels and straightforward row or compartment layouts. Special-shaped tins can create a distinctive keepsake, while requiring closer review of forming areas, insert geometry, carton efficiency and tooling.

The lid and opening direction should support the unboxing sequence. Lid formats, window areas, handles or other attachments are evaluated against the selected size, product weight, repeated opening, forming limits and shipping plan—not treated as interchangeable decorations.

Round tins — Continuous artwork and centered, nested or circular arrangements. Square and rectangular tins — Defined panels and efficient row, grid or compartment layouts. Special-shaped tins — Distinctive keepsake forms with closer tooling and packout review. Opening features — The lid, window, handle and access sequence are matched to the approved product set.

04

Engineer inserts, cards, headspace and transport protection together.

Junmei can provide or evaluate trays, dividers, liners, pads, multi-layer arrangements and custom product cards. An insert should locate the products without making removal difficult, while the headspace should protect the highest item and allow the lid to close consistently.

Outer-carton protection is part of the same packout decision. Project verification can include drop or vibration testing at agreed stages, with the sample, packing configuration, method and acceptance criteria confirmed for the order. No universal breakage rate or transport result is assumed before the complete pack is tested.

05

Coordinate print, finish and branding with formed areas.

Junmei evaluates CMYK or Pantone spot-color printing, varnish, metallic effects, embossing, debossing and window or handle placement against the selected structure. Key logos, legal text and fine details should remain clear of seams, curl zones, deep forming and other areas that may affect registration or appearance.

If a collection uses several designs on one structure, define the artwork list and version names before sampling. Approved samples or color references can be retained for production-color and repeat-order comparison; final color tolerances and reference-retention details remain project-specific.

06

Plan annual purchasing, versions and replenishment as one program.

For year-round or recurring gift programs, share the expected launch windows, forecast quantities, artwork waves and reorder pattern. Junmei can coordinate production planning around the customer’s annual purchasing cycle, while each confirmed schedule still depends on artwork approval, tooling, samples, quantity, accessories and packing.

This planning is especially important when several gift sets share one tin structure but use different inserts, cards or artworks. A version matrix and approved references help prevent mixed components and support repeat-order control without promising a fixed campaign deadline before the scope is locked.

07

Build the RFQ around a complete gift-set specification.

MOQ Starts from 3,000 pieces. Final MOQ depends on size, structure, printing, artwork versions, insert or accessory requirements and tooling.

Samples Typically ready in 3–7 working days after specifications and artwork are confirmed. Product-fit trials, custom inserts, cards, special structures or tooling can change the sample plan.

Bulk Production Typically about 25 days after the required sample or artwork approval and order confirmation. Multi-version packing, customer product availability and shipping time are not included.

For a useful recommendation, send:

  • every product and inner pack, with samples or accurate dimensions and weights
  • required arrangement, opening sequence, product visibility and reuse goal
  • insert, divider, liner, multi-layer, headspace or custom-card direction
  • preferred shape, lid, window, handle and finish
  • order quantity, artwork count and version matrix
  • target market and document or project-test requirements
  • annual purchasing cycle, launch windows or repeat-order forecast
  • artwork, delivery destination and required delivery date.

With these inputs, Junmei can compare relevant formats and identify what still requires fit, structure, tooling, packing or test confirmation. See how approved specifications move through production, or send the Gift project brief when your requirements are ready.
